Key takeaways
  • Yes. Bybit is registered with FIU-IND as a Virtual Digital Asset Service Provider. It completed the registration in February 2025 after applying on 26 June 2024.
  • The registration followed a penalty: on 31 January 2025 FIU-IND fined Bybit ₹9.27 crore for serving Indian users without registering, after its websites had been blocked.
  • Opening an account from India runs through KYC with your PAN card. You can fund it with crypto, with fiat for selected currencies, or through P2P.
  • Gains on crypto are taxed at a flat 30% plus surcharge and 4% cess in India, and tax is deducted at source when crypto is transferred.
  • FIU-IND has sent notices to dozens of offshore exchanges that serve India without registering, including Phemex in October 2025 and WEEX, BloFin and Bitunix in September 2026. Bybit is not on those lists.

For about a year, Bybit in India meant a blocked website and an open question. That question has an official answer now. Bybit is registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit-India, the agency that decides which crypto exchanges may serve Indian users. Here is how it got there, what the registration means for you, and what the tax side looks like before you place your first trade.

Is Bybit available in India?

Yes. Bybit is registered with FIU-IND and serves Indian users. In its announcement of 6 February 2025, Bybit said it had registered with FIU-IND as a Virtual Digital Asset Service Provider, after applying on 26 June 2024, and that it had settled the monetary fine and resolved earlier regulatory matters.

Registration is the requirement that matters. Since March 2023, every crypto exchange that serves Indian users has to register with FIU-IND as a reporting entity under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, whether it has an office in India or not. In its India account guide, updated in December 2025, Bybit states that it complies with the money laundering and terrorist financing obligations set by FIU-IND.

Bybit also said it would offer Indian users Spot, Derivatives, Options and Bybit Earn. Registration does not turn crypto into a regulated investment, and FIU-IND itself reminds the public that crypto products are unregulated and can be highly risky.

Why was Bybit blocked in India?

Because it served Indian users before it registered. On 31 January 2025, FIU-IND imposed a penalty of ₹9,27,00,000 on Bybit Fintech Limited. According to the official release, Bybit kept expanding its services in the Indian market without the mandatory registration, and the persistent non-compliance led FIU-IND to have its websites blocked through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

The order found violations of Section 12(1) of the Act and of several record keeping rules. Six days later Bybit announced that it had paid the fine and completed the registration. For a user, that sequence is the useful part: the block was about Bybit's registration status, not about anything Indian users had done.

How to open a Bybit account from India

Sign up, verify your identity with your PAN card, then fund the account. Bybit's India guide walks through the identity check: after the personal questionnaire, you photograph the front and back of your PAN card in the verification window. Until KYC is complete, deposits, withdrawals and parts of the trading tools stay restricted.

For funding, the same guide lists three routes: a crypto deposit from another wallet or exchange, a fiat deposit for selected currencies, and P2P trading with more than 60 payment methods and no platform fee. Whichever route you use, check the network before you send crypto, because a deposit on the wrong network can be lost.

If you want the trading fee cashback, sign up through the affiliate link before you open the account. The cashback is tied to the account through your UID, and an account created without a referral cannot be linked afterwards.

How is Bybit trading taxed in India?

Gains on crypto, which Indian tax law calls virtual digital assets, are taxed at a flat 30% plus surcharge and 4% cess. The Income Tax Department's ITR-2 FAQ also says VDA income is reported transaction by transaction in a separate Schedule VDA.

On top of that, tax is deducted at source when crypto is transferred, and the department matches the sale value in your return against the TDS shown in Form 26AS. The rules moved to the new Income Tax Act, 2025 from April 2026, so section numbers in older guides have changed. This is a summary, not tax advice; for your own return, check with a chartered accountant.

Which other exchanges has FIU-IND flagged?

FIU-IND names offshore exchanges that serve Indian users without registering, and the list keeps growing. On 1 October 2025 it sent notices for non-compliance to 25 offshore providers, among them Phemex, BingX, BitMEX, CoinEx, LBank and Poloniex. On 9 September 2026 it added 15 more, including WEEX, BloFin, Bitunix, Pionex, WOO X and WhiteBIT. Both times it also sent takedown notices for their apps and websites.

Four of those names are exchanges Trade Reclaim works with: Phemex, WEEX, BloFin and Bitunix. If you live in India, that matters more than any fee table, and it is why this guide points Indian traders to Bybit. As of October 2025, FIU-IND counted 50 registered providers.
